Where God and Human Beings Meet

Prayer is our blood-bought opportunity to engage the God of the Universe in a conversation. Crazy to think about, right?

But as often happens in relationships, there can be times when we just don't want to talk to Him. Maybe we're mad at Him...maybe we think He is mad at us. Maybe we're struggling to hear His voice, or maybe we just don't like His answer. Maybe we're giving God the silent treatment, or maybe we're spilling the beans of our daily life in detail. Our relationship with God can certainly be complex, and the complexity of the relationship is often seen in the content of our prayers. Author Philip Yancey says it like this:

"If prayer stands at the place where God and human beings meet, then I must learn about prayer. Most of my struggles in the Christian life circle around the same two themes: why God doesn't act the way we want God to, and why I don't act the way God wants me to. Prayer is the precise point where those themes converge." (from Prayer: Does It Make Any Difference?)

So even when things are complicated, prayer is the best means to receive clarity. You see, our God is "not a God of confusion." (1 Cor. 14:33) He wants to give us clear direction, but we have to seek Him to receive it. He's just a prayer away, so what are you waiting for?

Making It Personal:

  • What resonates (connects) with you from the Phiip Yancey quote?
  • Have you ever really thought about prayer being the place "where God and human beings meet?"
  • What is an area of your life in which you need clarity right now? Ask God to give you clear direction today.
