When we first began SAGE in 1998, the phrase "girls ministry" did not yet exist in the ministry world vernacular. However, over the last decade, there has been a surge in both interest and debate about this 'new' area of ministry. With that in mind, let us take a moment to briefly give you our humble definition for girls ministry.
Girls ministry is simply the process of equipping young women to become Christ-followers.
We all know the value that exists in addressing age and gender-specific needs in a culturally relevant manner; however, it is SAGE's belief that this should be done within the context of intergenerational discipleship.
You see, some people might believe that girls ministry is a new phenomenon, but the truth is that God is way ahead of the curve on this one. The concept of girls ministry can be traced back to numerous passages in Scripture. Whether it be the mentoring relationship shared between Ruth and Naomi or the bond between Mary and Elizabeth, the concept of older women investing in the lives of younger women is found throughout the Bible.
As we evaluate where our culture is today, the need for these kinds of relationships exists now more than ever. Girls are facing more and more pressures with every passing day, yet many lack the spiritual foundation needed to stand strong in times of temptation. It's time for us to realize that the need goes beyond a mere failure to mind their spiritual P's and Q's. Most girls today do not even have a sense of identity regarding what it means to be a "woman," much less a godly one.
This is why it is imperative for the church to provide an environment where truth is taught and support is given. Our pastors and youth pastors can definitely teach Biblical truth, but only we can teach from experience how to be godly women, wives, mothers, sisters, daughters, and friends. And that is the heart of girls ministry: teaching and training young women how to love Christ and how to live that demonstrates the depth of their love for Him.
We hope you will join us in our effort to see girls ministries beginning, growing, and thriving in every church and community around the world.
