Mandatory Sex Ed

Sex is certainly one of the most difficult issues to address with today's teens. So to avoid the giggles, awkward moments, and deer-in-headlight stares, we often choose not to address the issue at all within the walls of our churches. Or there are some out there who reiterate, "Just don't have sex," and hope that covers it.

But all of us know that does not even begin to cover it.

Teens today have access to more information than ever before, so they'll find a way to get answers to their questions. But in a sexually-saturated culture, we can be sure that most of the answers they find will be based on something far different than God's truth.

In the absense of parents and churches providing answers/resources, others are stepping up to take responsibility for teens' sexual education.

The Times recently reported that leadership in the UK had approved a decision to make sex education mandatory within its schools. Check out a portion of the article below:

"All 15-year-olds must receive at least one year of sex and relationship lessons, Ed Balls, the Schools Secretary, said yesterday. Those whose religious or moral values prevent them from attending will be classed as truants and may be punished by the school. Until now parents could opt out of lessons about contraception, sexually transmitted diseases and homosexuality until their children were 19."

If it's happening in the UK, it's likely that the US is not far behind. Anyone scared yet?

Q&A: How do you feel about this decision?

Q&A: What responsibility do you think schools have to teach sex education? What about churches?
